Jumble, Humble

Perhaps when we are humbled we can best engage the present--humbled as not to look regretfully at the past
or longingly at the future

without proper perspective.

Not self-correcting or analyzing to take the struggle into our grasp,
nor placing expectations on the idols that don't satisfy:
these handles are those that deceive.

Humility is found where we meet the present moment in all its truth,
where past and future are brought into proportion.
Holiness meets the profane,
and profane acknowledges that the Holy is just that.

Humility does not notice itself--
not because it is ignorant,
not because it is empty of something--
but because it is full of Someone else.

When we are humbled, let us not look at ourselves, out of vanity,
or look to how we wish things would be,
but to the Giver of both humility and grace.
